Alternate part definition between Part and its Prime Part
If the “Alternate part definition between Part and its Prime Part” process parameter in the Set Inventory Process Parameters” activity is set as Automatic (1), the system updates the alternate part definition for the new part in the Maintain Alternate Part Nos activity as follows:
Makes the alternates of the prime part as alternates for the new part.
Sets the prime part as the Interchangeable Part #.
Sets the interchangeability rules for the prime part/interchangeable part as “Two Ways”.
Sets the priority for interchangeable part as “1” ,
However, if the process parameter is set as Manual (0), it is imperative that the user provide alternate part definition for the new part in the Maintain Alternate Part Nos activity .
To proceed, carry out the following

Creating parts information – An overview
A part is usually created at the company level and is unique for the company. All the main information of the part can be added in this page. The details entered for the part in this page are maintained for various analyses.
You can add the identification details like the part number, the part status, the description of the part, a keyword for easy identification of the part, the type of the part and the category to which the part belongs. You are provided with the option of generating the part number automatically, that is by incrementing the last issued part number.
Copying part details
This page also allows you to copy the details of an existing part and modify the details if required. The purchase, sales and planning details of the existing part are also copied when the part main information is copied.
What you can enter in this page
You can define the original equipment (OEM) details like the part number assigned by the manufacturer, the name of the manufacturer, the CAGE number and the NSCM number. CAGE refers to the Commercial and Government Entity Code given to the manufacturer and NSCM refers to the NATO Supply Code for Manufacturer assigned to the manufacturer.
Design details such as the base part number, prime part number, details of the drawing document, details of the source document and the material composition specification can be defined.
The base part number is identified as an attribute of the Part number to track the changes of a given Part number due to engineering modifications. For example, a steel rod when delivered could have the part number “69-65812-4”. The base part number of this part could be the same (“69-65812-4”). The rod might be subjected to modification at a later date, at which point, the part number can “69-65812-5”. The base part number for this new part number will be “69-65812-4”. Thus the base part number remains the same for whatever changes the part undergoes.
The prime part number is identified as an attribute of the part number that enables to retrieve a set of alternate parts for a defined part number.
Basic Shelf life details, the unit of measurement of the stock, the standard cost and the type of expense incurred can be specified. You can also add physical details such as the gross weight and volume along with the corresponding unit of measurement. A part account group can be identified for the part which is used to maintain part related accounts.
Once the part is created you can assign a status to it. A part can remain in the “Fresh” status until all the information regarding the part has been updated. A part can be used in inventory transactions only when it is in the “Active” status.
“Create Numbering Class” activity under the “Document Numbering Class” business component.
“Create UOM” activity under the “Unit of Measurement Administration” business component.

The shelf life of a part refers to the period for which it can be maintained on the shelf without any deterioration. For a part, you can specify the shelf life details such as the shelf life unit, designed shelf life, minimum shelf life and alert value.
Set the “Shelf Life Unit’ drop-down list box to “Years”, “Months”, “Weeks” or “Days” to specify the unit of shelf life.
Enter the maximum and minimum values for the designed shelf life, minimum shelf life and alert value.
Identify the part as Lot Controlled or Serial Controlled
You can specify whether a part must be lot controlled or serial controlled. When a part is lot controlled, it is tracked using the number of the lot to which the part belongs. When a part is serial controlled, it is tracked using the serial number of the part.
You can also specify the method for generation of serial numbers or lot numbers.
Check the box in the “Sl No Controlled” field to specify that the part must be serial controlled.
Set the “Sl No Logic” drop-down list box to “Automatic Generation” to indicate that the internal serial number of the part will be automatically generated by the system.
