Create UOM – A summary of the activity
This activity allows you to add the Unit of Measurement (UOM) of the different products dealt by an organization. The UOM is defined at the company level and is universal across all components. Apart from defining the UOM and its description, you can also decide whether the UOM can be used with fractions while recording transactions. Once defined, you cannot delete a UOM; you can only disable it.
Conversions can be made from one UOM to another. When conversions do not depend on the nature of the part, that is, when the conversion factor is universal, it is called as the Part Independent Conversion. A classical example of this type is the conversion from Kilograms to Grams. When conversions depend on the nature of the part, it is called as Part Dependent Conversion. An example of this type is the conversion from Kilograms to Gallons.
The “Create UOM ” page allows you to add information pertaining to the UOM. The “Create Part Independent Conversion Information” page allows you to define the conversion factors between UOMs. These are standard conversions. The “Help on UOM” page allows you to search and select a UOM.

What you can do in this activity
Define UOM for different products
Allow or disallow fractional UOM in transactions
Define the conversion factor for the part independent UOM
Define UOM for different products
You can create UOM for different products by assigning a unique code and a description for it. The UOM created is used across different applications and locations.
Use the “Create UOM” page to create UOM for different products
Allow or disallow fractional UOM in transactions
You can specify whether to allow or disallow fractions in a particular UOM. Allowing or disallowing fractions will decide the usage of the UOM in transactions.
Use the “Create UOM” page to specify whether to allow fractions or not in a particular UOM.
Define the conversion factor for the part independent UOM
In certain cases, conversion from one UOM to another is not dependent on the nature of the part. This is known as Part Independent Conversion. You can define conversion factors for part independent conversions, which helps you to convert from a UOM to another UOM.
For
part dependent conversions, the conversion factors for UOMs are defined
in the “Part Administration”
business component.
Use the “Create Part Independent UOM Conversion” page to specify the conversion factor for converting from one UOM to another.
