A scale represents the entire range of salaries applicable for a given grade or grade set. It can encompass multiple salary ranges, with each range applicable for a given time frame, in an organization. Alternatively, a scale can represent a single salary range. The scale specifies the upper and lower limits for salaries, and the increment either in amount or percentage.

Example: Consider the pay scale of an employee to be $ 5000 – 1000 – 7000. Here, 5000 signifies the lower limit, 1000 the increment amount and 7000 the upper limit of the salary.

The scale is later attached to an employee based on the grade or grade set; therefore, a scale is directly influenced by the grade and grade set.  Employees of various grades get different salaries. If an organization does not have grades within the grade set, all the employees of a given grade set will be assigned the same scale.

Relationship between grade set, grade and scale: A grade set is a means of classification by which different employees in the company are grouped together based on their responsibilities, perquisites, facilities, etc. Examples of grade set are trainees, supervisors, executives and clerical staff. A grade is a means of classification by which employees defined within a specific grade set are differentiated. For instance, the ‘Manager’ grade set can have grades defined from M1 to M4.

A scale will be attached to an employee based on the  grade and grade set. As such, the upper and lower limits of the scale must synchronize with the scope of the grade and grade set.

The Create Scale activity enables you to create a new scale and associate it to the required employment units. There can be multiple scales for a grade set. There can also be different scales for each grade defined within that grade set.

The need for creating a scale arises due to the following reasons:

To create a scale, you are to identify it uniquely through a code and description. After specifying the employment units to which this scale must be associated, you can decide the type of currency in which the salary must be paid.

This activity also allows you to specify whether the scale must be made available to all the employment units within the enterprise, only those units to which the login user is attached or to distinct employment units.

In addition, you can also choose to activate the new scale now or later. If you activate the scale, it means that other activities can make use of this scale.
