Hangar Work Reporting - An overview

Aircraft, which is the primary entity of the airline, has to be serviced in order to operate it with maximum efficiency and to comply with the safety standards set by the regulatory authorities. Various types of routine maintenance of the aircraft is done as per the pre-defined maintenance schedules., which is compiled based on the manufacturer’s recommendation and the operator experience. Non-routine maintenance of the aircraft is done when defects are observed either during normal operation or during the course of standard maintenance execution. The maintenance activities of the aircraft are broadly categorized as major maintenance and line maintenance. The major maintenance called as checks which are executed in the work centers (hangars).  The work to be done is communicated to the work centers through work orders. The details of the maintenance activities being executed on an aircraft  need to be recorded for tracking of the maintenance done and for accounting of the labor, material and other facilities used. Hangar work reporting facilitates the recording of the work executed, in terms of tasks, for the major maintenance of the aircraft.

Recording of the work details spans the entire work execution phase, starting from recording of the aircraft grounding (at the hangar) details, to recording of resource consumption after completion of reporting of the maintenance activity and closing of the work order.

Apart from accounting & tracking of the work done, recording of the work details serves as a feedback mechanism for the work planner to monitor the progress of the work. Deviations from the work plan can be detected and corrective measures can be initiated based on reported details. Besides progress monitoring and control, work reporting also establishes  record of history of the maintenance activities performed on the operating asset. This forms an important input in performing a variety of analysis such as work-study, failure analysis and performance trends.
